Module summary

Using the techniques the students have already applied to their research thesis, this module provides students with the opportunity to develop these skills further in the context of addressing complex clinical (or clinically-related) issues. In addition, it enhances and/or exposes students to other, vital skills. These will help prepare students for careers in complex, specialist clinical subjects in today's medical world which is increasingly based on an evidence based approach and which requires professionals to be able to interpret and adapt their approach accordingly.

Objectives

Learning aims:

The module aims to teach and enhance several, essential transferable skills which are required by any clinical specialist working in today's healthcare systems. They will know how to approach difficult or controversial real life clinical and clinically-related scenarios in a research and evidence-based manner. From a research context, they will develop their library-research, team-working, communication, IT, presentational and written skills as well as professional, attitudinal, organisational and time management skills. They will develop an appreciation of the need for Continuing Professional Development.

Learning objectives: on completion of this module the student should be able to:
- thoroughly access (using library resources, search engines etc), assess and synthesise relevant information from the scientific and other appropriate literature to address difficult clinical or clinically-related scenarios (but for which there is often no textbook answer or clinical guideline);
- present a reasoned, validated justification for the management and/or treatment approach adopted to address the scenario both orally and in written format;
- undertake a professional presentation (using electronic, visual presentational materials) to an audience of peers and other clinical and supervisory colleagues.

Learning outcomes
The student should know how:
- to access and search the research and scientific literature using library resources including search engines and manual searching;
- to weigh up the scientific and research literature in order to assess its worth and validity with regard to the problem posed;
- to synthesise information obtained from the research and scientific literature to formulate a reasoned and logical management or treatment approach to the problem posed;
- to present the information in a professional and reasoned manner to a professional audience in both oral and written formats.

Syllabus

In their 2nd year, students will be presented with a list of possible scenarios and they will select one. They will undertake a detailed investigation of the specific areas/issues the problem relates to within that term. Students will work with the relevant Supervising tutor ( such tutors will act only as advisors/facilitators but may set deadlines to ensure work is completed on time) to help guide them towards searching out the relevant scientific and other relevant literature (using the library search facilities) so that possible solution(s) can be arrived at. The reasons for arriving at the relevant conclusions, treatment or management approach adopted must be justified in terms of quality of the scientific and other relevant evidence found and presented by the relevant student. Subsequently, each student will also provide a detailed report complete with a reference list.

The presentation: should be a Powerpoint (or equivalent) computer presentation and should last about 20 - 30 minutes (maximum) and will be presented to the student¿s peers and other clinical and supervisory staff who are encouraged to ask questions. This presentation is formatively assessed and provides feedback which will inform the written report.

The 5,000 word written report will be completed at a specified later date in conjunction with the relevant Supervising tutor (who will continue to act only as advisor/facilitator).

Private study

Projects will require a facilitator. The facilitator will be a supervising tutor or nominee. Students will develop a skeleton framework to discuss with their facilitator which will act as a guide/advisor to the issues they feel the scenario presents. Following discussion with the facilitator, this framework can be modified and finalised so that the student is then able to undertake appropriate literature searches based on the framework. Supervisions, timescales and deadlines will be arranged by mutual agreement between the student and facilitator as the student reads, assesses and weighs up the evidence that emerges to compile their IT presentation and written report. Before the formal presentation takes place, the student will present the draft to their facilitator to seek advice to improve both their presentation and their presentational skills. Finally, following the presentation (which is assessed formatively according to set guidelines), the student will complete their written report (according to separate guidance) in conjunction with their facilitator. This will be assessed summatively by the facilitator.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are monitored and receive verbal feedback and encouragement throughout the whole Research Case Study process.
