Module summary
Through practical and theoretical teaching to appreciate how structure effects physical, chemical, biological and optical properties. You will through lectures and self-directed learning gain greater theoretical understanding of the relationships between materials structure and their properties. You will then be able to explore this practically through a series of practical case studies of materials. Objectives
The objective of this module is to, through theoretical and practical means, understand the fundamental relationship between a material‘s nano- and micro-structure and how that relates to its properties, e.g. strength, fracture toughness, translucency, setting time, biocompatibility, etc.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module you will be able to:
1. Measure selected materials properties.
2. Critically discuss the theoretical and practical scientific basis for the relationship between materials’ properties and their microstructure.
3. Demonstrate a mastery of the design of suitable microstructures to give desired properties across the full range of dental materials.
Skills outcomes
No additional skills.

Background reading ahead of practical classes and lectures.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The first report will be used formatively (only) to aid the students in an understanding of the level and amount of information they should include. The remaining five will be used as the summative assessment. There is also the opportunity for verbal feedback during the practical sessions.
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Practical | Practicals (six) run throughout semester 2, submission of 1200 word reports a week after practical, on a rolling basis are assessed and feedback given (see below). | 100.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
The first report will be used formatively to help the student for subsequent practical reports. The mean of the remaining five practical reports will form the summative assessment of this module. Individual reports amassing a mark of <50 may be compensated for. There will be a need to mark and publish results and feedback to the students in a timely way that may formatively help students in addition to their first formative report. The format of this assessment may be subject to change as a result of restrictions imposed as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic but the learning outcomes will remain unchanged and approval of the appropriate PSRB (Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Bodies) will be obtained.
