Pre-requisite qualifications

Native or near-native fluency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese.

Students whose native language is not Mandarin Chinese must consult with the module leader to assess their suitability for this module. This module is not open to students who can already speak Cantonese. This module is mutually exclusive with EAST2180

Module summary

Learn to speak Cantonese! This module is designed for fluent Chinese speakers who want to learn how to communicate in oral Cantonese. It covers the pronunciation, tones, grammatical structure and vocabulary of Cantonese. Classes include conversation, role-play, and learning from audiotapes. You will be able to conduct basic conversations in Cantonese at the end of the course.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be:
- familiar with the Cantonese pronunciation and tones;
- able to understand everyday language in Cantonese;
- aware of the fundamental differences between Cantonese and Mandarin syntax and vocabulary;

Syllabus

This module is designed for fluent speakers of Mandarin Chinese who want to learn how to communicate in oral Cantonese. It covers pronunciation, tones, vocabulary and grammatical structures. Role-play, audio / visual tapes and conversations are used to develop oral and aural skills in functional language for everyday situations.
