Module summary

East Asia is one of the world's most dynamic and diverse regions. It is also becoming an increasingly coherent region through the inter-play of various integrative economic, political, and socio-cultural processes, otherwise known as 'regionalism'. Studying these regionalism processes may be understood in the broadly context of East Asia's regional political economy. Moreover, the integrative processes of regionalism are closely bound to East Asia's regional economic development. This module explores the various aspects of East Asia's regional political economy with special reference to regionalism and development. Key themes include regional organisations, international business, cities and infrastructure, environment, international migration, energy security, international development, trade, finance and geopolitics.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand basic inter-related theories and concepts concerning international political economy, regionalism and economic development;
- appreciate both historic and contemporary perspectives on East Asia¿s regional economic development experience;
- critically analyse and inter-relate various aspects (e.g. social, environmental, geopolitical) of regional economic development in East Asia;
- evaluate the connections between domestic and international factors, as well as the regional and global, in relation to the above.

Skills outcomes
On completion of this modules, students should have improved their skill capability in the following areas:
- Individual research capabilities
- Teamwork and verbal / social communications (through unassessed group presentations)
- General analytical and scholarly skills from undertaking seminar preparation (including presentations) and assessed work.
