Module summary

In this module you will explore, in depth, an aspect of your degree pathway that particularly interests you. This might relate to your next stage of study or professional training. You will be able to connect theory and practice and examine the relationships between these. Your project could be an empirical study or could be primarily desk-based research.

Objectives

The module aims to provide an opportunity for students to develop and research a personal interest in a topic relevant to their degree pathway through engaging in independent study, which is supported by seminar discussion and individual tutorials.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should be able to plan, execute and report on a small-scale research project in a topic relevant to their degree pathway drawing on the skills developed earlier in the programme through research methods training modules.

Students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of links between theory and practice;
2. Demonstrate scholarship in the identification of research questions and in the planning and evaluation of research;
3. Identify appropriate methods of data collection and analysis;
4. Demonstrate understanding and practice of ethical issues specific to their research;
5. Describe research undertaken;
6. Present and evaluate findings demonstrating critical analysis or results;
7. Evaluate the quality of their own research;
8. Identify the impact of the research on their own knowledge of the field.

Syllabus

The project will be in a field relevant to individual students’ degree pathways: Education, Childhood Studies, or TESOL. The focus of the project will be determined through consultation with academic staff.

The module will cover the typical structure of a dissertation:
- Choosing a topic, formulating research questions, writing a rationale.
- Reviewing literature
- Research approaches, methodology, design
- Research ethics
- Data analysis

Private study

Students will be designing and conducting independently an individual research project. This will be with the support of a supervisor and a small number of lectures and tutorials about the skills needed.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive formative feedback during meetings with their supervisors. Supervisors will also be able to read and comments on draft work prior to submission of the dissertation.
