Module summary

This module is for students who already have already studied Japanese for about 2 years and have reached pre-GCSE, CEFR A1 or equivalent and wish to take their Japanese to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a good level of communication and accuracy in speaking, listening and reading. Kanji recognition will be given more focus than writing, although this will constitute an element of the course. Communication skills which will be developed include discussion, interview techniques, presentation skills and reporting skills.

Objectives

To consolidate knowledge of Japanese at elementary level and develop skills and competence up to GCSE level or A2 (CEF) or AS/CEFRBI.

On completion of the module, students should be able to deal with information of a general nature in a familiar context and identify and note main points and opinions; sustain longer conversations in Japanese and handle familiar and unfamiliar situations with some ease; exchange opinions and ideas on a range of topics. Students should be able to report facts and opinions with accuracy.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should be able to:
- Make themselves understood by a sympathetic native speaker over a range of everyday topics
- Read slightly longer conversations, texts, advertisements and folk tales
- Understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, and leisure activities, and be able to understand the main points of some TV programmes when the delivery is slow and clear
- Demonstrate proficiency in listening through accurately extracting key information from audio sources
- Write personal letters describing experiences and impressions
- Write short independent texts in Japanese, including using kanji where appropriate
- Demonstrate greater understanding and knowledge of key grammar points with appropriate usage
- Demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Japanese and English.

- Colloquial and casual forms of speech; dialects
- Situations in the workplace
- Making recommendations; instructions; reporting
- Talking about culture and society
- Current affairs: covering areas relating to the environment, the arts, culture, entertainment and media
- Conditional and potential forms, transitive and intransitive verbs.
