Objectives

1. To be able to critically evaluate the assessment process for both Children and Adults
2. To understand the legal, policy and statutory guidance that underpins child and adult safeguarding procedures in practice.
3. Understand the knowledge and skills for using evidenced based perspectives in working with adults, children and families
4. Understand and articulate the ethical dilemmas in undertaking work with service user and carer in work with both adults and children and family work.
5. To critically evaluate the importance of working within restorative practice, signs of safety and other strengths-based approaches
6. To critically evaluate the current issues around working with children within the care system including permanency planning.
7. Be able to critically evaluate and analyse current issues around working with adults in social work and social care
8. Evaluate the impact on self of working within complex organisations and in challenging situations and how to manage this.
9. To critically evaluate the importance of supervision and support

Learning outcomes
Students will:
1. Be able to critically evaluate the social work task of undertaking assessments within legal and procedural frameworks.
2. Be familiar with the use of interagency child protection and child and adult safeguarding procedures in practice, including the current versions of statutory guidance.
3. Understand the knowledge and skills for using evidenced based perspectives in working with adults, children and families
4. Analyse the ethical importance and potential dilemmas in service user and carer participation in work with adults, children and families
5. Be able to critically evaluate the importance of working within restorative and other strengths-based approaches
6. Be able to critically evaluate the current issues around working with children within the care system including permanency planning.
7. Be able to critically evaluate and analyse current issues around working with adults in social work and social care

- Current national guidance, law and policy in relation to a range of areas of adult and children's social work
- Social Work assessment and intervention in statutory settings with adults and children

Private study

Guided reading and research related to the syllabus using online and other resources
Preparation for class discussions and assessments
On line quizzes and exercises to reinforce classroom learning
Group learning and post placement workshops will generate private study as students prepare for group presentations

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Lectures will be supplemented with a mix of discussions and group activities so there will be scope for dialogue between students and between students and lecturer when questions can be asked and understanding tested. Post placement workshops will focus on reflecting and learning from placement experiences. The group project: students will be divided into groups of 4 to agree a topic for presentation. Formative assessment will be rehearsing presentation and the coordination of each group member's contribution.
