Module summary
This module involves a series of seminars which examine issues relating to the operation of the criminal justice process from the point at which victimisation occurs through the process by which suspects become offenders and on to the different methods by which offenders are punished. It will enable students to gain an understanding of the complex and dynamic nature of the criminal justice process and the relationships which exist between its components.Objectives
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able:
- to understand and deploy theoretical perspectives with which to critically explore debates relating to the criminal justice process;
- to critically analyse the role of various agencies in the criminal justice process;
- to critically analyse historical and current penal policy debates in the areas of sentencing, prisons and community sentences;
- to demonstrate in a written form a critical understanding of key aspects of the criminal justice process, drawing considered conclusions that are rooted in contemporary scholarship and research evidence from primary and secondary interdisciplinary sources.
