Module summary

This module introduces students to key contemporary debates relating to the application of intellectual property law in terms of the conferring of IP rights and the managerial strategies employed to protect them. The module will explore the creation, acquisition and management of rights relating to the ownership of creative, marketing, information and technological IP assets. There will be an additional emphasis upon creative and marketing rights; to serve this purpose, case study examples of brand management (and counterfeiting) and celebrity will be presented.The teaching of this Intellectual Property Management module will take place through five two hour teaching sessions. Although these are referred to below as seminars in the documentation, the two hour periods will combine a variety of teaching methods ranging from lecturing, to small group work to seminar presentations. Students will be expected to prepare before each session and participate in the discussions.

Objectives

The objective of this module is to enable the student to explore the theoretical and practical issues relating to the creation, acquisition and management of rights relating to the ownership of creative, marketing, information and technological IP assets. The module will enable the student to achieve the stated knowledge and skills outcomes.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:
- demonstrate an appropriate level of postgraduate knowledge and understanding about intellectual property management;
- be able to critically evaluate evidence from existing research and scholarship, integrate theory with practice, apply knowledge and understanding in context;
- be able to make choices about intellectual property management strategies and also being able to reflect upon them;
- be able to demonstrate independence in learning, communicate effectively through writing and other forms of communication, respond to complex issues creatively and systematically, demonstrate self-direction when problem solving.

Skills outcomes
The student will be able to demonstrate the respective Intellectual, Practical and Transferable skills relating to knowledge outcomes 2, 3 and 4.


Syllabus

The course will cover the following subjects:

- Introduction, outline of the module and overview of the issues

- Managing Creative IP assets
> a) basic areas of law will be copyright and related rights
> b) special topics for discussion will be piracy and bootlegging.

- Managing Technological assets
> a) basic areas of law will be patent and design rights
> b) special topics for discussion will be design piracy.

- Managing Marketing assets
> a) basic areas of law will be trademarks and brand protection
> b) special topics for discussion will be counterfeiting and celebrity rights.

- Managing Informational assets
> a) basic areas of law will be confidential information and database rights
> b) special topics for discussion will be data loss and identity theft.

50 hours - 10 hours reading and reflection following each seminar
