Objectives
To allow students to pursue an in-depth study of a topic in law. To instil and to exercise advanced research, writing and presentational skills. The dissertation is a substantial piece of work (10,000 words) and contributes 60 credits to the overall degree mark and classification for the degree.Learning outcomes
The dissertation process should enable the student to:
- Develop and demonstrate advanced analytical, research, writing and presentational skills
- Develop substantial and detailed commentary in connection with issues/a specific topic relevant to the programme
- Demonstrate the ability to plan and execute a major project demonstrating independence and initiative
- Apply in depth knowledge of law in chosen area of study in a relevant area of law
- Demonstrate detailed understanding of range of critical viewpoints and literature
- Produce a substantial independent written piece of work

Syllabus
Each student chooses a proposal topic which is discussed for approval by an appointed supervisor. Students will then draft an overall outline of the proposed research including an indicative bibliography, and a chapter outline or other evidence of work in progress. This will be followed by the creation of a dissertation plan which includes a description of each chapter and by the submission of up to 2 draft chapters. Thereafter, students complete a 10,000 word dissertation.
