Module summary

Students are increasingly expected to make use of electronic sources of information and learning. This module will develop the knowledge and skills that you will need to become information literate at degree level of study. It will equip you with the skills to access, process and present academic information and help you to develop analytical and critical reading skills.

Objectives

To ensure that students have the skills to access, evaluate, critically analyse, process and present information in academic contexts

Learning outcomes
Knowledge of:
-the literacy skills and critical issues associated with understanding, evaluating and making appropriate use of resources
-Appropriate ways in which electronic and media sources can be used and referenced within academic writing.
Processes involved in:
-successful information searching
-critical analysis of information
-presentation of information in a range of formats; charts, illustrations, images and word processed documents
-effective use of Power Point and Excel
-effective verbal communication and presentations

Skills outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be able to:
-Demonstrate the skills needed to access different types of information
-Demonstrate media literacy skills
-Produce information in a range of formats; charts, illustrations, images and word processed documents;
-Create Power point presentations;
-Communicate both verbally and non-verbally with different audiences.

Syllabus

- Make the distinction between opinions and evidence based information.
- To construct academically valid discussions and analyse the same issue from different perspectives, whilst referencing academic information.
