Module summary

This module provides a framework through which individual students can work independently on an agreed topic. You will develop skills and knowledge in your chosen field as well as ability to manage a small-scale research project.Your studies will be structured through a written Learning Contract that sets out your subject and the work that you will undertake during the module. As well as the Contract, you will produce a written report (5,000 words).

Objectives

This module will enable students to undertake structured study of a chosen subject in order to acquire broader and more complex knowledge, engage with its main methods of enquiry and further develop skills of a critical evaluation and argument.

On successful completion of the module a student will have:
1. Written a Learning Contract that articulates the HE level 2 knowledge and skills outcomes listed below in relation to their chosen field of study.
2. Implemented the Learning Contract, demonstrating efficiency and autonomy in the management of research, learning and reporting appropriate to HE level 2.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module the student should have provided evidence of:
1. familiarity with the major relevant concepts, information and principles which are standard features of the subject of study;
2. knowledge of the major techniques of data and information gathering and analysis which apply to the subject of study.

Skills outcomes
On completion of the module the student should have provided evidence of ability to:
1. design and implement a programme of independent study;
2. present a range of evidence, ides and arguments clearly and accurately;
3. evaluate, critically analyse and interpret evidence, ideas and arguments;
4. make sound judgements and articulate lines of argument using the major theories, concepts and methods of the subject studied;
5. communicate complex material and arguments clearly through written work that follows appropriate conventions of academic writing;
6. exercise skills necessary for taking responsibility for their own learning.


Syllabus

The field of study will be agreed between the tutor and the student , subject to the approval of the Manager of the Programme for which the module is bieng followed. The Programme manager will consult with the relevant external examiner as appropriate.

At the outset, the student will produce a written learning contract, in consultation with the tutor, which must specify:
- the focus and scope of the study;
- any additional outcomes in relation to subject-specific knowledge or skills;
- the reading, resources and research methods that are to be used;
- a schedule for study and submission of course work;
- details of the topic and format of assignment tasks and their relationship to learning outcomes.

Private study

195 hours - The purpose of the module is to allow students to extend their knowledge of a chosen topic and develop relevant academic skills for undertaking research and presenting findings.

This is achieved in the module through direct practice of the indpendent study and academic writing, working within the framework established in the learning contract and supported through tutorial meetings.
