Module summary

This module enables students to experience a setting which is different from their own. It will enable students working in one setting to compare this with another setting which may be similar to their own or markedly different. Students supporting SEND in mainstream schools will be able to experience learning and teaching in a specialist setting.

Objectives

- To develop the ability to relate theory to practice and critically explore issues and challenges in the work place
- To analyse the skills and knowledge needed to undertake and manage learning activities in a SEND setting
- To work individually and as part of a team to complete an agreed project or activity
- To identify good practice in working with SEND learners
- To identify and reflect upon the roles of staff in supporting learners with SEND

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Assist skilled SEND practitioners at work and reflect on personal learning
- Work individually and with others to complete a relevant and agreed project or task
- Demonstrate a responsible approach to practice both when working with others and working unsupervised
- Critically reflect on personal and professional responses to work with SEND learners
- Critically analyse significant incidents, and their management, in the workplace.

As part of this module, students will develop a range of digital literacy skills. Further details are provided in the module handbook

- Within a supervised structure, the students will have the opportunity to reflect and critically review existing provision for learners with SEND, and have the opportunity to consider how this provision differs from their own setting

Reading and reflection on learning in relation to the workplace 112

Students will be required to produce a weekly blog discussing their experience in their particular setting. This will form the basis of their final report. Students will be encouraged to use the online materials in the VLE and read appropriate texts, academic books and peer review articles to expand their learning and relate this to the work context.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the module via student blogs, and tutors will be available via email and telephone. There will also be tutorials to monitor progress and formative feedback on assignment drafts.
