Module summary

This module will support students in developing the research skills and knowledge on ethical procedures necessary to undertake a real world project in relation to a subject- or professional- based issue

Objectives

In this module, students will build on the learning from their year one research project by acquiring further skills in research methods, data analysis approaches and writing up of research. They will carry out a substantial research project proposal and corresponding ethics application in preparation for the year three dissertation.
The module will give students an experience in designing a research project on an area of the programme that has taken their interest. This can be on a subject- or professional- based issue. It will also consolidate students’ skills on evaluating the reliability of different methodological approaches, selecting appropriate research and analysis techniques, applying ethical principles to real world projects and presenting research.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this module students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of how to:
-plan and present a research project on a subject of interest to them
-select the most appropriate research methods to carry out the project
-evaluate the reliability and validity of the research approach adopted
-address ethical issues and risks in the project
-choose an appropriate data analysis approach
-present a research project proposal

Syllabus

The module will introduce students to a wider range of research methods, and data analysis techniques and research writing styles. Students will be expected to apply previous learning from the level 1 module, Introduction to Research and Ethics, to design their own project, with supervision, and complete the ethics review and risk assessment procedures ready to be submitted to an ethics committee. The subject of the research project is likely to have arisen from an area of the wider programme. Students will be expected to show awareness of how their research relates to a wider social/ global context.
