Module summary

This module will build upon your knowledge and skills from year 1 to help you develop your role as an Assistant Practitioner. You will develop additional skills such as, advanced communication, leadership andmanagement, teaching and assessing others. We will provide you with the opportunity to understand a range of mental health conditions and interventions for these, and how these may interact with physical health.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to enable the student to build on the learning from year 1 and further develop their ability to think and behave as a critical and reflective practitioner. Specifically linking this to the care of patients with a physical and/or mental health condition. The module will extend the skills of the Assistant
practitioner relating to advanced communication, and will explore the role as a leader and manager within a healthcare setting.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Recognise the most commonly identified mental health conditions and the
interventions available to improve mental health.
2. Develop knowledge – based skills for work as an Assistant Practitioner with
patients experiencing Mental health difficulties.
3. Apply acquired knowledge in the workplace as leaders and managers of others
4. Demonstrate the skills for teaching and assessing staff and patients/service
users.
5. Demonstrate the skills required of a reflective practitioner, regarding caring for
patients with a physical and/or mental health condition.


Syllabus

The content will provide you with the opportunity to understand a range of mentalhealth issues and how this may interact with physical health. Advancedcommunication skills will be explored to compliment your developing role as anAssistant Practitioners and as a leader and mentor of both staff and patients.
Healthcare policy will be used to analyse and challenge oppression, stigma andhealth inequalities in modern UK society.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Formative peer feedback within the classroom
- There is opportunity in class for students to ask specific questions of the tutor

- Tutors are able to provide feedback on draft work as appropriate
