Module summary

Why is there a gap between research conducted in learning and teaching and its awareness by those working directly with learners? Why is research conducted in the 'classroom' often seen as less 'academic' than that of 'real' researchers? This module aims to answer these questions by critiquing current research, exploring practitioner research and creating a research proposal.

Objectives

- To introduce a broad range of research projects in the learning & teaching sector
- To critically analyse a range of research projects in learning and teaching
- To reflect upon research and its outcomes in relation to professional practice
- To identify strategies and methodologies for conducting professional research in the workplace

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Evaluate the appropriateness of differing methodologies (including practitioner-research) as typically used in learning and teaching contexts/ own professional practice.
2. Use a range of tools which support having access to current research from publications relevant for own professional practice.
3. Analyse research methods for their effectiveness in addressing research questions centred in learning and teaching contexts/ own professional practice.
4. Identify a range of ethical considerations relating to research conducted in learning and teaching contexts/ own professional practice.
5. Identify a suitable research question and create a project proposal for the dissertation module.

Skills outcomes
Critical analysis of research methodologies and outcomes.

Development of own research proposal.

Syllabus

- Process of conducting a literature search and writing a review for a research project.
- Identifying suitable learning and teaching research topics and writing research questions.
- Awareness of ethical considerations when conducting research in educational settings.
- Development of a critical `voice'.
- How to write a research proposal.

Private study

Students will identify and analyse a range of research projects in terms of their aims, objectives, methodologies and outcomes. They will be using this knowledge to inform the development of a project plan for their own research understanding in year two during the dissertation module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be monitored informally in terms of their understanding of the research process & via formative student presentations. Formal monitoring will be via tutorials to support preparation for the students' own research project.
