Module summary

The module is designed to give you an introductory level overview of Accounting and Finance. When taken together with other introductory business modules in the International Foundation Year it provides a solid grounding in key elements of the management discipline. Taken as a standalone option it provides you with the opportunity to gain an introductory level understanding of some fundamental concepts and techniques in accounting and finance, as a basis for more advanced study. Prior knowledge of accounting is useful but not required.

Objectives

The module aims to provide students with a sound overview of fundamental accounting and finance principles, concepts and techniques. It is intended to give students an appreciation of how financial and management accounting information is prepared and used in organisations.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Recognise and explain fundamental concepts and techniques in accounting and finance
- Summarise the effects of simple financial transactions according to financial accounting principles

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Work quickly and accurately when applying numerical techniques
- Prepare a report synthesising and interpreting the results of quantitative analysis
- Locate, extract and analyse data and information from multiple sources
- Reference appropriate research sources

Subject specific
- Apply fundamental accounting principles and techniques to prepare basic financial accounting and management accounting information
- Interpret the findings from applying investment appraisal techniques to make suggestions as to what decisions management should take
- Apply basic numerical techniques to interrogate financial statements and other publicly available information and explain the findings to provide a basic insight into the financial position and performance of a listed company

Indicative content:
- Preparation and interpretation of basic income statements and statements of financial position for sole traders and limited companies
- Preparation and interpretation of cash budgets
- Sources of finance
- Investment appraisal techniques
- Review of some topical issues
