Module summary

Leadership - whether you want a theory based understanding, or have a real desire to lead an organisation more efficiently now or in the future, this module is for you. It will give you an understanding of your own and others potential and skills. It should help you look at how you organise yourself and approach activities now. As part of any organisation (student house, social situations, voluntary activities, scout group, nightline, University Union committee, small and large enterprises...) understanding these issues can be really helpful.Leadership is vital for success in any professional area; the ability to engage co-workers or employees and communicate your ideas effectively to ensure cooperation is something everyone will need. The skills covered in this module offer you the chance to learn how to influence, persuade and lead groups of people, as well as understanding how groups work together and what makes people do what they do.This module will be delivered through a series of interactive workshops and guest lectures. The workshops will be delivered by Leeds Enterprise Centre staff, offering insights into the theory of group interaction and leadership alongside practical exercises, giving you the chance to reflect on your own experience as well as your learning.


This module aims to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of leadership, particularly how this relates to small and developing businesses. Students will consider their own leadership potential as well as engaging with seminal and contemporary writings on leadership and their application.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe and explain the concept of leadership and its relevant theories
- Demonstrate knowledge of the dimensions of leadership and analyse how these might relate to their own personal style
- Analyse the theories and concepts underlying how leaders operate ethically and create an ethical culture in the way they manage and operate within organisations
- Evaluate how relevant leadership theories can be applied in practice in different settings and situations

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

- Exercise effective basic leadership and change management skills
- Manage time effectively in an independent learning context

Subject specific
- Select and apply in a known context the skills and attributes necessary in intrapreneurship
- Deploy basic networking and negotiation skills in a supportive workshop environment


Indicative content

Students will work through key areas of research in Leadership, from Traits and Skills to styles, ethics and how to work in and lead teams. Introduction to module, coursework details, group assignment.

The module will be taught primarily through workshops, with group work tasks and guest lectures taking up the remainder of the module teaching.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Each in-class session is interactive with group work and discussion, with online activities allowing for individual reflection as well as group collaboration, so involvement is key to this process. Progress will be monitored and issues will be addressed during the interactive workshop and online learning sessions.
