Module summary

This module provides an introduction to the strategic thinking and strategic management principles with a focus on all types of organisations in the profit and non-profit making sectors.Organisations of all types face increasingly complex environments and external challenges and they need to devise strategies to prosper over the medium to long term.

Objectives

The module introduces participants to key strategic management concepts and analytical frameworks and models as experienced in profit and non-profit making sectors. Participants will learn about shaping and communicating an organisation’s strategic vision to key stakeholders. It also helps them to develop a critical understanding of the strategy formulation and implementation process.

On completion of this module participants will be able to examine the critical role of leadership so that a clear understanding of its importance in developing and implementing strategic plans are gained. A critical awareness of strategic change will be documented and the impact analysed in reference to new plans and changing customer needs with their demands. There will be an appraisal of the ethical aspects of developing strategies and a focus on corporate social responsibility.

Knowledge outcomes:

Upon completion of this module, participants will be able to:
1) Appraise the differing theories, approaches and views reflecting the richness of debate within the field of strategic management as found in a variety of sectors
2) Evaluate a plan and understand how to develop a vision and strategic direction
3) Apprehend the role of leadership in the strategic management process
4) Critically evaluate the strategic implementation process as illustrated through cases in different contexts

Private study

Independent online learning refers to non-facilitated directed learning. Participants will work through bespoke interactive learning resources and reflective activities in the VLE. This will be supported by face to face physical class room delivery with a combination of lectures and seminars.

Private study refers to directed reading and self-directed research in support of learning activities and discussions, as well as in preparation for assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunity for participants to check their understanding. Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.
