Module summary

The module adopts a praxis approach to the subject by outlining and critically evaluating the development of leadership theory, whilst at the same time employing a specific 360 degree leadership evaluation methodology to evaluate participants’ behaviours in more detail. A specific 360 degree methodology (https://www.mrg.com/) is employed to assess the participant’s own leadership behaviours in context. 22 specific behaviours are evaluated, and a comparison made between the participant’s self-evaluation, their peers’, line manager’s and their direct reports’ evaluation. The module is designed to help participants:- Critically evaluate leadership theory in the participant’s organisation- Extend their investigative, research and diagnostic skills - Critically evaluate the impact of leadership strategies upon employees’ behaviours- Create an action plan for their own leadership development

Objectives

The module explores key concepts and models in the theory of leadership, and issues in the practice of leading within organisations.
On completion of this module participants will be able to critically evaluate the range and typologies of leadership theories so that the standards of interpersonal excellence (engagement of colleagues and leading people) with behaviours (valuing difference and making judgements) are integrated within leadership strategies. There will be a critical awareness of ethical and responsible leadership practice with specific leadership behaviours being identified, critically evaluated and information synthesised, so that the positive and negative implications for managing self and others are appraised throughout the two years period (the module runs parallel to all other modules).
