Module summary

You will be introduced to a range of analytical and critical approaches that build upon, and extend, those encountered in level 2, and encouraged to reflect on the intellectual, methodological and critical assumptions underpinning these approaches. The module will equip you with a suite of contemporary and/or traditional analytical methods and approaches suitable for application across a broad range of musics, and support you to develop your ability to present complex analytical information in appropriate textual and graphical forms. You may be expected to complete preparatory work for each class and to contribute actively to practical (which is to say, analytical) and discursive activities within class sessions.

Objectives

This module provides students with the skills to understand and apply a suite of contemporary and traditional musico-analytical techniques, and to reflect critically on the suitability of these approaches for application across a broad range of musics. Students will develop an ability to draw strong and cogent links between the techniques and strategies developed in this module and musics covered in and beyond their degree programme as a whole.

Learning outcomes
1. Demonstrate advanced and critical engagement with and understanding of a variety of complex musico-analytical strategies and terminology, appropriate both for specific repertoires and for broader application.

2. Select and apply musico-analytic strategies appropriately to musics (both familiar and unfamiliar) through critical reflection on the suitability of different approaches to different repertoires.

3. Evidence a keen analytical understanding, with the ability to present complex information efficiently in appropriate forms, whether graphic or written, some of which should be comprehensible to a non-specialist.


Syllabus

The core syllabus introduces a range of analytical and critical approaches that build upon, and extend, those that encountered in level 2. Indicative content includes advanced formal, harmonic and rhythmic analytical methods, as well as approaches that examine the interaction between music analysis and external systems, such as hermeneutics and narrative. Students will be encouraged to reflect on the intellectual, methodological and critical assumptions underpinning the approaches covered on the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be expected to complete pre-class tasks and contribute to practical and discussion activities in class sessions, facilitating ongoing monitoring of understanding and progress and provision of formative feedback.
