Objectives

Students will emerge from this module with in-depth knowledge of a particular area of music management theory and/or practice, and will be able to apply it in practice. The Project outcome will feature the practical application of music management skills acquired throughout the course. Students might, for example, undertake the management of a musical event, or carry out management consultancy as part of a placement they source, work on a recorded music project, or undertake management of a particular ensemble or group over a specified period of time. These are only indicative examples, and the range of possible activities is much wider, embracing the whole spectrum of the music business.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
• devise, plan, and execute an extended project in music management, the focus having been defined in negotiation with an approved supervisor;
• reflect analytically on their practice and learn from that reflection;
• identify and make effective use of appropriate methodologies, theoretical frameworks, and source materials;
• demonstrate understanding of the relationship between music management theory and practice;
• demonstrate a degree of intellectual confidence and independence of thought, and a questioning approach to their area of study;
• present their work appropriately and to a high standard

Syllabus

A number of sessions will be delivered by staff and guest speakers on various music management aspects useful for the students in deciding the nature and scope of their projects. Indicative topics may include arts funding and grant applications, artist management, project opportunities with the School of Music’s partners (Opera North, Leeds International Piano Competition, etc.), and facilities and resources. Students will undertake highly focused and detailed research into an aspect of music management negotiated in consultation with a supervisor, and present their findings in the form of an extended project with a practical element. Projects undertaken on the module typically include the management of a practical event or group (management of a concert or short series of concerts, or the activities of a local artist, band, or ensemble, within a defined time period), recorded music projects, and the curation of a multimedia event with a musical component, though this is not an exhaustive list, and practical work is supported by interim submissions and a reflective, descriptive and theoretical commentary.

Private study

The precise split of hours will be particular to each student, and will be negotiated with the supervisor; however, typical activities will include:
• planning time;
• time spent on market research, marketing, etc., as appropriate to the specific project;
• time spent managing final project outcomes;
• private research time;
• record-keeping time;
• preparation of interim and final submissions.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students’ progress will be monitored through regular individual and group supervisions, and the presentation pitch and interim report both afford opportunities to monitor progress while also forming part of the module assessment.

Methods of assessment

Coursework
Assessment typeNotes% of formal assessment
ProjectResearch project in an area of music management, and accompanying reflective commentary, equivalent to 10,500-11,500 words.75.00

Total percentage (Assessment Coursework)100.00

• The precise nature of the project submission will vary depending on the type of project and will be agreed with an appropriate staff member. Where a project includes an event this will normally form part of the submission; in other cases students might show the practical outcome of the project through a presentation, or the reflective commentary might be enlarged to include a written account of the practice. • The oral presentation will normally take the form of a pitch, accompanied by a handout that includes an indicative bibliography for the planned project of 10-12 items. • In most cases it will not be practical to resit the Project element in the same format as its original manifestation. In such cases, and alternative (usually purely written) submission will be formulated by the module coordinator and supervisor.
