Module summary

On this module, students create a fully-realised public performance for a paying audience within self-organising, collaborative performance companies and parameters of timetable, budget and creative brief.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...

created a fully-realised public performance within a collaborative performance company;
collaborated as a member of the self-organising performance company in at least one pre-defined production or performance role, which might include writing, direction, design, dramaturgy, outreach, marketing, etc.;
contributed creatively and intellectually to both the development and production process under tutor supervision;
understood the ethical implications associated with public performance;
engaged with the health and safety procedures of risk assessment.

Learning outcomes
1. form an ensemble on the model of a professional theatre company creating performance work for a paying audience in a public performance venue.
2. develop under supervision a formal project proposal within given parameters of timetable, budget and creative outcomes;
3. negotiate and carry out an individual role within a collaborative company as appropriate to the performance context, from a list that may include: performer, writer, dramaturge, manager, designer, technician, etc.(roles are likely to be multi-faceted);
4. apply creative solutions and initiatives to performance problems incorporating critical feedback from peers and collaborators;
5. reflect authoritatively on the aims of a specific performance and its contexts and how scenographic, production and event management processes and techniques contribute to the realisation of creative work;
6. critically evaluate the work identifying opportunities for own future professional development;


Syllabus

On this module, students create a fully-realised public performance within self-organising collaborative performance companies, supervised by tutors and supported by technical staff. These companies will propose projects via a formal Proposal, in a pre-determined public venue such as stage@leeds and within parameters of timetable, budget and creative brief. The final outcome will draw from the combined production and performance skills of the company to create a work for a public audience.

The module builds on the skills developed in Level One and Two modules such as PECI 1703 Performance Project 1 and PECI 2703 Collaborative Performance Project 2. At this Level, the emphasis is on students being able to operate effectively as formally organised performance companies, working independently under tutor supervision. The process of developing project proposals will typically begin at the end of the preceding academic year. In a typical year, a number of slots will be available in the stage@leeds Autumn and Winter seasons. The timetable and budget for each such slot will be determined in advance - usually projects will cover an 8-9 week period in either Semester - along with any specific creative brief that may be appropriate to manage the season as a whole. Students will then be invited to negotiate all other project parameters in advance, including individual roles assumed within the project company.

Private study

194 hours reading, preparation for sessions, (e.g. scriptwriting, research, sourcing materials, etc.) and reflective writing.
