Module summary

European Security and Defence Analysis is designed to introduce students to the work of European Security Organisations. Students will be asked to consider the historical evolution of these organisations, their internal structures, their external relationships, the tools at their disposal and the central problems that they face. The course discusses these questions with reference to historical and contemporary case studies and examples, for example, the case of the former Yugoslavia. By the end of the course, students will be able to offer coherent insight and analysis into some of the central problems facing European societies today.

Objectives

On completion of this module you should be able to:

a) demonstrate an awareness of the internal functioning and external relations of European security organisations;
b) demonstrate knowledge of the central issues facing these organisations;
c) demonstrate knowledge of the history of European Security Organisations;
d) engage in comparative analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of European Security Organisations;
e) demonstrate a knowledge of how the organisations have functioned with references to case studies and examples;
f) provide a coherent analysis of the future directions that these organisations may take;
g) make written presentations that are logically coherent, well-structured, informative and well-presented;
h) follow an independent line of research within the overall context of a guided reading list, seminar and lecture structure.
