Module summary
The module will examine contemporary scientific study of cognition and emotion. The contribution from the experimental psychology, neuropsychology and clinical psychology to this field of study will be considered. Current research papers will be considered alongside seminal work allowing for the understanding of both state of the art and the development of the discipline.Objectives
On completion of this module students should:Be familiar with the main theoretical and methodological approaches to study of emotion and cognition.
Understand the role that emotion plays in different cognitive processes (e.g. perception, attention, memory, language, thinking and decision making).
Understand how disorders of emotion (e.g. anxiety, depression, PTSD) affect cognitive function.
Learn about the psychology of emotional regulation.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
Critically evaluate evidence for the role that emotion plays in different cognitive processes.
Understand of the ways in which the interaction between cognition and emotion influences our everyday behaviour.
Communicate key scientific findings to the general, lay audience.

Syllabus
There will be 8x1.5 hour lectures, 4x1.5 hour seminars and 2x1hour tutorials on science writing for general audience. The module will cover the following topics:
Introduction to study of cognition and emotion
The role of emotion on perception and attention
The role of emotion on memory, reasoning and problem solving
Disorders of emotion and their effects on cognition
The psychology of emotional regulation.
Cognition, emotion and day to day life.

Private study
In weeks 1-8 students will be given a list of original research articles to read alongside their lecture notes. This will involve approximately 6 hours of independent study per lecture (8x6=48hours).In weeks 8-12 students will be divided into groups of 4-6 and assigned a journal article to present to the rest of the group. Preparation of the presentation will take approximately 10 hours.
In week 12 students will submit coursework blog. Preparation and writing of the blog will take approximately 40 hours.
Final exam will be in MCQ format. There is 32 independent study hours allocated for the exam revision.

For the presentation students will be split into small groups of 4-6 students. They will be provided with a list of possible presentation topics to choose from. They will be expected to work on the presentation as a team and to deliver 15 minute presentation followed by 5 minutes question period. The group will be given formative feedback on the oral aspect of the presentation and a mark on the written output (slides). Students resitting the verbal presentation will be asked to submit PowerPoint slides rather than physically giving the presentation. For the coursework blog students will be required to write a science blog post. As this will be a novel task for most of them student will be given examples of good science blogs and this coursework will be further supported with two tutorials where the challenges of communicating scientific findings to general audience will be discussed. Resit will take the same format.

The exam will comprise of high level MCQs and students will be given 1 hour to complete them. Practice MCQs will be provided prior to the exam. Resit will take the same format.
