Module summary

The module is designed as a flexible independent study module to allow students to pursue in-depth study in a topic related to their programme. This mode of study allows effective delivery of relevant additional content to students across a number of different programmes. The independent study and focus on research relevant skills will also be excellent preparation for final year integrated masters projects that these students will undertake at level 5.

-To obtain an In-depth knowledge of a specific topic related to the student's programme of study.
- Develop independent study and research skills

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students should be able to:
1.Demonstrate understanding of a current research topic of relevance to their degree programme including both historical development and ongoing activity in that area.
2.Be able to construct a coherent and valid research proposal
Demonstrate an ability to synthesise published research and critically evaluate the state of knowledge in a chosen area.
To independently research, synthesise and critically analyse existing literature and data
Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively in writing.
To be able to write an extended report on a specific topic


Syllabus

This module will allow students to undertake a piece of in-depth independent study on a topic related to their programme of study. The student will work with an academic supervisor to scope the project, and the supervisor will provide support and advice through the project. Projects will develop independent research skills in finding, synthesising and critically analysing a wide range of existing literature. Depending on the topic the project may also involve an element of novel research or data analysis under guidance from the supervisor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Feedback and guidance will be provided on the research proposal. An interim report (formative) will be specified in order to ensure students get detailed feedback during the project.
