Module summary

The module develops awareness of petroleum systems and the factors determining the efficacy and profitability of a hydrocarbon exploration and production project. It also allows a student to undertake a short, realistic, industrially-relevant individual project, and to prepare a technical project report to a 'manager' as would be done professionally.

Objectives

The module develops awareness of petroleum systems and the factors determining the efficacy and profitability of a hydrocarbon exploration and production project. It also allows a student to undertake a short, realistic, industrially-relevant individual project, and to prepare a technical project report to a 'manager' as would be done professionally.

Learning outcomes
The module will reinforce and extend scientific and technical knowledge of petroleum systems and their exploitation.
Generic independent working skills (literature search, time management, commercial relevance, reporting skills) will be developed.


Syllabus

The general sequence of work will be:
- Introductory presentations on petroleum systems and examples; data acquisition from exploration through to production; production data through the life of a field; commercial-style report-writing and presentation skills.
- literature review of the above
- individual selection of a field case history
- interpretation and critical assessment of key steps in the field’s life and what were the geoscience and engineering factors that led to step changes
- report preparation and presentation; oral presentation to the group and written report
- with the exact details being variable depending on case study chosen hydrocarbon field.

Private study

The student will be required to carry-out literature-based research (to give a rationale and context for their case study and to document the chosen field history), analyse publically available data (e.g. on field production histories), then interpret and critically assess the factors determining the success or otherwise of the field, all leading to an evidence-based outcome to the task and preparation of a formal report, as if presented to management.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

8 academic tutorials (including review of structure/outline of project report); and including opportunity for students to give oral presentations as their projects develop. Formative feedback to be provided on these activities.
