Module summary

Understanding travel: social analysis module offers the opportunity to explore key issues in the transport sector and wider society and to develop a social analytical framework. This module aims to equip Masters Degree students with the skills and knowledge necessary to apply a social analysis in practice and policy in the transport sector in both professional environments and higher academic studies. This module will be taught by an expert team using a mix of teaching methods and materials including online activities and practical ‘hands-on’ workshops designed to engage and stimulate learning.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with critical appreciation of key substantive issues in the transport sector and wider society and technical skills in social analysis. Key issues considered in the module will be defined both from the individuals perspective and from a policy perspective. Key issues will include: equities, diversities and accessibilities; the interrelationship of health and travel.
The role of attitudes in changing consumption; social networks, temporal rhythms, spatial distribution; travel networks, community and identity; and their importance for understanding travel, crime, risk and security.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should have knowledge of key issues in social analysis of transport provision and travel practices. The module will develop skills and understanding to enable students to describe, analysis, synthesise, and evaluate the social impact of transport policy, planning practices and individuals travel patterns.

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will have been given the opportunity to develop and practice a range of skills associated with social analysis. The students will develop and practice skills in: Measuring public attitudes; Analysing social networks; Planning for accessibilities; Audit tools; social impact evaluation; option generation and appraisal; health impact assessment techniques.


Syllabus

Introduction to social understanding of travel and transport; equities and diversities; accessibilities; accessibility planning; option generation and appraisal; health, travelling and the transport system; health impact assessment; introduction to audits, 'duties' and legislative requirements such as DDA; evaluation of social impact; understanding and measuring attitudes to travelling practices; social networks; analysing social networks; risk and security; synthesis and social analytical frameworks.

Private study

Students are expected to spend their study time on background reading for lectures and seminars, preparatory work for workshops and assessed coursework.
