Module summary

This module provides the key knowledge and understanding needed to manage and operate the railway on a day-to-day basis. It recognises the interplay between passenger needs, safety and system performance.

Objectives

This module aims to cover the foundations of railway operations and management from a multidisciplinary perspective and discuss the main challenges faced in day-to-day operations within a complex railway industry.

Learning outcomes
1. Comprehensive understanding of the presence of different systems and agents in a railway industry.
2. Demonstrate knowledge and critical awareness of the foundations of routine operations in the railway.
3. Critical awareness of key elements such as signalling, safety, travel demand, timetabling and scheduling.
4. Ability to evaluate railway theory and relate methods to practice.

3. Nature of rail demand
a. Economics of pricing and demand
b. Drivers of demand - service quality and time

5. Scheduling of staff and rolling stock
6. Network optimisation

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Tutorial sessions will provide feedback opportunities. These will be scheduled between the two teachinig periods and the assessment hand-in dates. This facilitates feedback on the first assessment before students undertake the second.
