Module summary

This module will highlight the multi-discipline approach required for the successful completion of rail projects and provide students with a broad range of the fundamental skills required in today's railway industry.

Objectives

This module aims to:
1. Provide students with fundamental knowledge of railway engineering, including permanent way, electrification and sustainability
2. Develop awareness of key technical complexities and interrelationships of a wide number of engineering specialisms
3. Provide students with an overview of the structure of the railway industry, its planning and operations

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will have:

1. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of critical components that comprise the railway system
2. In-depth understanding of the complexities and interrelationships of the technical components of a railway
3. A critical awareness of sustainability in the railway industry
4. The ability to apply appropriate engineering analysis to plan and design a railway line

Syllabus

1. Railway planning and the role of rail
2. Permanent way: geometry, alignment design, earthworks
3. Track system: functions, forms and components, switches and crossings
4. Sustainability: environmental impact of railway
5. Electrification: vehicles, overhead catenary systems, civil and structural aspects of electrification

Private study

Students will need to conduct independent reading, both of given materials and self-found materials. This will support their learning and be an integral part of the coursework.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' learning progress will be monitored by in-class responses and the coursework process. Students will be fully supported during the process of completing their coursework via a variety of channels including physical discussions as well as virtual environment (e.g. VLE forums). Feedback on coursework performance will be provided assisting the students to understand weaknesses and suggesting ways that work can be improved
