Objectives
By the end of this module, students should have a basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the main body systems, together with how pathology and pharmacology can alter them.Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students will understand, and be able to describe, the structure and function of body components, and how they interact, at a basic level.
Skills outcomes
One of the key aims of this module is to help students move to a university-style approach to learning, with personal responsibility for organising their learning, and using a number of resources to synthesise an understanding of the subject material.
Syllabus
- Structure of the human body.
- Main functions and characteristics of the main body systems.
- Basic biochemistry and molecular biology.
- An introduction to the concepts underpinning pharmacology, and some elementary examples.

Private study
Independent online learning: A range of resources from the 'Interactive Physiology' and 'PhysioEx' series will be used to back up lecture material.Students will fill in workbooks each week, based on lectures, online material, and private reading. Understanding will be checked by weekly online formative tests, for which feedback will automatically be provided, and in tutorials.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Weekly on-line formative tests and fortnightly tutorials related to worksheets, will ensure satisfactory progress throughout the module. Module manager and lecturers will be notified of students failing such assessments, so that additional support can be provided. Conditional release of support material, based on completion of each week's test, will ensure student involvement.Summative MCQ exam in week 7.
