Objectives

This module has two sets of objectives:
1. Subject-specific: to deepen and broaden, and reinforce understanding of, particular topics within the subject, particularly relating to modules being studied in parallel with it, and to introduce broader aspects of the subject not covered elsewhere in the course.
2. Transferrable skills: tutorials will cover and assess a wide range of skills, including critical reading, data analysis, and different forms of presentation. Furthermore, this module provides an opportunity to develop self-directed learning techniques.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module, students will be expected to be able to:
- Understand the fundamental principles underlying several research techniques in physiological science;
- Identify which questions can be addressed by specific techniques;
- Plan a critical experiment to test a hypothesis, including the identification of essential controls;
- Process raw data sets to extract specific information;
- Apply and interpret relevant statistical tests to experimental data.

Skills outcomes
The module provides many opportunities for self-directed learning.
- It will develop independent research skills to analyse and interpret data presented in structured workbooks.
- It provides an opportunity to work in groups and/or as individuals on individual assignments within each tutorial, to perform short presentations in tutorials and to engage in debating physiological and medical topics.


Syllabus

This module will consist of an introductory lectures together with 6 tutorials on a range of topics relevant to the Biomedical Sciences.

Private study

The private study time will be used primarily in preparing for the tutorials: learning about the topic to be discussed, and preparing a presentation using the method listed for that tutorial.

It is expected that students will spend an average of 4 hours per tutorial either collecting material on-line, or using online support tools.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- Student attendance at lectures and tutorails will be monitored in line with standard faculty practice.
- Completion of coursework and exam.
- Engagement with VLE resources.
