Objectives

In this module students will build on the skills learnt in the semester 1 skills module and should be able to:
- discuss ethical issues relating to experiments in biomedical sciences;
- state the basic principles of experimental design;
- use simple statistics and other basic mathematical techniques to analyse and interpret data;
- report experimental findings in a manner similar to publications in the biomedical literature;
- use some experimental techniques relevant to modern biomedical sciences;
- use scientific literature in an appropriate manner and reference published work correctly.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- identify ethical issues in biomedical sciences;
- identify the need for and apply statistical analyses to data;
- locate and select scientific information to support arguments;
- describe the basic principles of the techniques used in practical classes.

Skills outcomes
Transferable skills will be developed through submission of practical reports, laboratory book and a personal reflection.


Syllabus

Students will use isolated tissues to study the actions of drugs. Students will be introduced to the methods used to:
a) prepare viable tissues
b) evoke and record responses from isolated tissues and
c) analyze response data in graphical form.

Any absence from a practical class will attract a v-code. To remove the v-code the student must submit a lab report, based on data provided to them, by a given deadline. The lab report will be check marked to determine it has reached a pass standard. Feedback will not be provided on it.
