Objectives
- To provide an appreciation of current scientific, engineering and technological challenges that render development of multi-scale modelling and simulation approaches desirable.- To provide an understanding of the concepts underpinning and the steps required for a practical realisation of modern multi-length and multi-time scale modelling and simulation approaches.
- To provide a demonstration of the application of multi-scale modelling and practical experience of implementing and using a number of multi-scale models.
Learning outcomes
The module will deliver an overview of modelling and simulation techniques at the microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic length scales, for example molecular modelling, computational fluid dynamics modelling, dispersed particle modelling and discrete element methods. It will also provide an understanding of how different length scale techniques can be formally integrated. Finally, it will show how multi-scale modelling and simulation can be applied to solve practical problems of relevance to the chemical and process engineering industries via a number of case studies.
This module will enhance, significantly, computer based skills, problem solving skills, research skills and information literacy as well as a students' ability to write project reports based on a number of computer-based projects and targeted reading of topics related to multi-scale modelling and simulation.

Training in commerical simulation software.
Syllabus
Introduction to modelling and simulation approaches individually; molecular modelling, discrete element methods, computational fluid dynamics and process systems modelling. Typical examples showing application of each technique, and scope for integrating multi-scale modelling concepts in chemical and process engineering applications. Training in use of modelling and simulation approaches, and their application to practical problems of relevance to chemical and process engineering industries.

Private study
Independent online learning will be by way of familiarisation and self-training in the use of computer software, and computer-based modelling software applications that will be used to construct multi-scale models in accordance with the coursework project briefs.The time allocated for private study will include a structured programme of reading against a list of sources provided to the students and the review of weekly lecture notes. Researching and preparation of reports on the four set assignments are included in this total.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress will be monitored through the training and demonstrator-assisted sessions and through feedback sessions in lectures, in which academic staff and demonstrators will be present. It will also be monitored via the submission of the technical reports associated with each of the projects set.Methods of assessment
