Pre-requisite qualifications
A Level Biology grade C or above. At least ten credits at level 1 in a biomedical related subject or successful completion of the first two years of an MBChB programme at UK Universities or international equivalent. For international students proof of English Language proficiency will be required. In line with undergraduate medicine we require a minimum of English GCSE grade B or IELTS 7.5 (including a 7.5 in spoken English), or equivalent.This module is approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This module will cover the anatomy of the human cardiovascular system from the whole organ down to subcellular level, relating this to underlying biochemical processes and regulatory mechanisms that underlie cardiovascular function and enable bodily homeostasis by maintaining an appropriate supply of blood and nutrients in both the healthy individual and in a disease states.Objectives
The objectives of this introductory module are:To develop detailed knowledge and understanding of the structure and function of the different components of the mammalian cardiovascularsystem at whole body, regional, tissue and cellular levels.
To promote an understanding of routes and mechanisms by which cardiac and vascular function is regulated and maintained in the healthy physiological condition and in disease states
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to identify synthesise and evaluate information from the research literature on structural and functional aspects of the cardiovascular system in thealth and disease.
Compare and contrast the anatomical and biochemical mechanisms underlying the regulation of cardiovascular function in health and disease.
Skills outcomes
Appreciate the mechanisms of regulation of the cardiovascular system through understanding of the structure and function of the mammalian cardiovascular system in health and disease.

Private study
Students will supplement the material presented in lectures by reading original scientific articles and reviews.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Discussion in class tutorial based around lecture material and background reading.The performance in formative sample long answer questions will allow the student to understand the requirements of the end of module examiantion and assess their own progress.
A tutorial session/classroom discussion will be held as a revison session and to give feedback on the formative long answer questions at the end of the module.
Towards the middle of term a tutorial will be held to give advice on the early module lectures, written examination technique and the setting of formative long answer questions.

The examination will be open book online assessment. 48-hours, with a completion time of 2-hours. A resit for this assessment will be taken during the August resit period.
