This module is not approved as an Elective

Objectives

To teach the fundamental principles of mechanics relevant to Civil Engineers which underlie subsequent courses in Structural Analysis, Fluid Mechanics and Geotechnics, and teach the basis of Structural and Stress Analysis to first year students so that they possess sufficient background to enter the Level 2 Structural Stress Analysis courses.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should understand the fundamental principles of mechanics, and possess basic skills in structural and stress analysis that allow them to study more advanced courses in level 2 and 3.

Syllabus

1. Statics - the definition of equilibrium, forces, stresses and strains; the Mohr's circle of stress; the concept of Elasticity and plasticity; Hookes law, and the behaviour of simple spring systems.
2. Resolution and addition of forces, analysis of pin-jointed frames.
3. Bending moments and shear forces - Gallileo's analysis of a beam, illustrated with BM and SF diagrams.
4. Centroids of area, the neutral axis and second moments area
5. Stress and strain in bending beams
6. Virtual Work. Unit Load Method Applied to Trusses.
7. Deflection of Symmetrical Section Beams. Double Integration Method. Macauley's Method.
8. Combined Bending and Axial Load. Core of a Rectangular Section.
9. Shear Stress Distribution in Symmetrical Section Beams.
10. Torsion of Circular Solid and Hollow Section Bars. Statically Indeterminate Bars Under Torsion.
11. Suspension Cables. Maximum Tension. Forces on Towers. Three-Pinned Arches. Symmetrical Three-Pinned Parabolic Arch Carrying a Uniformly Distributed Load. Bending Moment Diagram for an Arch.
12. Determinate Moment Frames.

Private study

- Study the materials and lecture notes provided(in paper or online)
- Practice the questions in the problem sheets; practice extra examples given in the example classes
- Review the module for the self assessed MCQs and the final exam.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

- 4 pieces of course work will be assessed throughout the period of the module, feedbacks and solutions will be provided;
- 2 self assessed MCQs will allow student and lecturer to identify the progress and problems - More worked examples will be provided in VLE for students' practices and the access will be monitored;
- finally a 3 hour final exam will conclude the outcome of the module.
