Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- examine and discuss concepts and theories related to the epidemiology, and aetiology of autism spectrum syndrome;
- describe current diagnostic classification systems of autistic spectrum syndrome;
- critically discuss the central features of autistic spectrum syndrome, considering the potential consequences for the individual, family and carers;
- appraise therapeutic strategies and approaches in the care, treatment and education of potential consequences for the individual's with autistic spectrum disorder;
- select, review and discuss internet/world wide web resources on autistic spectrum syndrome; appraise carers skills, knowledge and values effective in the delivery of services for individuals with autistic spectrum syndrome;
- discuss the range of services and networks available for individuals with autistic spectrum syndrome.

Syllabus

- Aetiology, incidence and descriptions of autism; historical perspectives, theories and emerging constructs of autism;
- diagnostic criteria: psychiatric and educational, ICD-10 & DSM IV criteria, pervasive development disorders and autism;
- autistic syndrome key features including social interaction, communication, imagination and thinking, educational diagnostic checklists;
- personal accounts, case studies and perspectivees on the experience of autism;
- impact of autism upon the individual, family and carer - health loss, gain and maintenance;
- autism and behaviours which challenge;
- communication issues and autism;
- therapeutic approaches to care provision, service models, multi-disciplinary structures, service values , staff and carer skills, knowledge and values;
- information technology skills, access to internet/world wide web resources on autism.
