Module summary
This module provides the student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of one of our European partners and the different socio-cultural, economic and political issues which affect the health of that population along with the development of the health system and to compare this to the UK. Students undertake a two week observational placement in healthcare provision linked with the host institution.Objectives
On completion of this module students will able to:- analyse the value of sharing and exchanging multi-cultural knowledge and experience;
- debate learning experiences with colleagues;
- gain understanding of and empathy for being a 'stranger' within another country;
- undertake an analysis of healthcare provision within a European Country;
- analyse how different nursing cultures define the nurses role.

- To develop the students' understanding of European and professional cultural issues that will promote and enhance healthcare by individuals practising in a range of settings.
- To enable students to recognise the international dimension of professional nursing knowledge and healthcare
- To develop the students' awareness, understanding and acceptance of cultural differences.
- To develop the students' awareness of and respect for clients' individual cultures
- To develop the students' understanding of the influence of historical, philosophical, ethical, economic, political and professional factors on their own and others' professional culture.

Syllabus
Cultural awareness of European countries - healthcare, economical, political, social, political influences; European culture in its unity and diversity; attitudes, values with regard to nursing within own country and European countries; role within another country - 'stranger'; observation of nurse's role - concepts of caring, nursing diagnosis, theory models; critical analysis - evaluation of health care; professional development - reflection; self management.
The intention is that students spend two weeks abroad during this module.

- Preparing for the exchange, flights, accommodation, visa, immunisations, insurance etc- Survival language
- Looking at the Country's information and researching about their healthcare system
- Finding out about the country's location, industry, population etc.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students undertake several contact points where progression organising the exchange can be discussed and assessed e.g- contact with the exchange coordinator are discussed,
- accommodation has been sorted and is acceptable.
- Students are aware of any country specific information re vaccinations, customs, regulations etc
- Completion of the risk assessment enables confidence the student is preparing for the exchange and highlights any areas of concern so action plans can be agreed and set.
- Contact numbers and mechanisms agreed.
Joint session on common topics are shared with HECS 3169 students
Students undertake a reflective session on return to discuss initial thoughts, feelings and impressions and share with other students. This is then built upon in the second reflective session to begin a more critical analysis of experiences and to identify the topic/theme for more in depth analysis to be used as the assessment topic/theme.

The presentation will consist of 5-7 slides covering the following themes: - Brief over view of healthcare systems with some critical analysis of the differences/similarities between the UK and host country - Critical analysis of a topic/theme that has interest the student demonstrating an understanding of cultural and political history/structure that may have contributed to the differences between the UK and host country - Key learning messages for the topic/theme review - Further slides to include Title slide, summary slide which could also be used as a poster for conferences/sharing of experiences, reference slides. - 10 minutes of questioning
