Module summary

Psychological development continues and this course will deal with specific pharmacological methods to deal with dental behavioural problems. Various drugs that can be used with Paedodontic patients will be discussed , as will the advantages, disadvantages and indications. The dental treatment needs and management approaches to be taken for a specific group of the handicapped will be described. Pharmacological methods and various drugs that can be used with Paedodontic patients will be covered. The dental treatment needs and management approches to be taken for the dental care of medically compromised children will be described.Controversial social issues of relevance to paediatric dentistry will be discussed. Students present these seminars providing a written handout and delivering a powerpoint presentation. Students continue with literature reviews and journal club where critical appraisal of published articles takes place.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to describe in detail and critically discuss:
1. the management of the developing dentition of children.
2. the specific psychological methods to deal with dental behavioural problems in children.
3. the clinical uses of fluoride for dental caries prevention; diagnosis of dental caries; aetiology, pathogenesis.
4. specific pharmacological methods to deal with dental behavioural problems.
5. dental treatments for handicapped children.
6. social issues of relevance to paediatric dentistry.
7. Have a knowledge of the use of sedation techniques in children.
In addition, students should be able to critically read, appraise and present scientific published articles of importance to paediatric dentistry.

Learning outcomes
The student should show in depth understanding in discussing and describing the following areas:
Dental development and management of the dentition in children:
* The management of the developing dentition of children.
* To appreciate that there are a number of differing ways to treat various dental development problems.
* the causes of delayed and ectopic eruption of teeth and the treatment options.
* crossbite conditions and their treatments in children.
* oral habits in children and their treatment in children.
* balancing, compensating and serial extractions of teeth in children.
* the various methods of space analysis of the dentition.
* the indications for use of space maintainers in children.

Behaviour management in children:
* the role of the dental environment and of the dental team in behaviour management.
* the effects of past medical and dental experiences in children.
* the different behaviour management techniques used in paediatric dentistry.
* the advantages and disadvantages of the various behaviour managemenet techniques.

Fluorides and caries prevention in children:
* how fluoride products act systemically and topically in children.
* To provide evidence based articles in support of the use of the various fluoride products in children.
* the safety precautions necessary for use of fluoride products in children.
* fluoride products suitable for home use by patients, for use by professionals in a dental setting and for use on a community level in children.
* the caries reductions observed for the different fluoride products.

Dental Sedation in children:
* specific pharmacological methods to deal with dental behavioural problems in children.
* dental treatments for handicapped children.
* social issues of relevance to paediatric dentistry.
the different pharmacological drugs used in paediatric dentistry to deal with dental behavioural problems.
* the advantages and disadvantages of each drug.
* the side-effects and drug interactions of each drug.
* the dosage schedule of each drug.
* the features of different medically compromised groups of children.
* the dental treatment needs and dental care in relation to the specific medical condition.
* the use of nitrous oxide as an inhalation sedation agent.
* the indications and patient selection for use of nitrous oxide.
* the uses of midazolam as a sedation agent in children.
* Be able to select suitable patients for sedation techniques.
* safety measures and scavenging systems.
* adverse events in dental sedation.
* the oral, nasal and intravenous use of midazolam as a sedation agent.
* Have a knowledge of alternative sedative agents.

Medical conditions in children:
* the features of children with cardiac defects, diabetes, cystic fibrosis, asthma, renal disease, haematological disorders, haemophilia, leukaemias, oncology and transplants.
* To outline the paediatric care of these children and their underlying medical problems.
* the dental implications and treatment options for these groups.
* the features of the most common medical conditions of children and the implications for their dental treatment.
* To develop reasoned thinking and logical discussion of controversial issues.
* Know how to relate academic teaching to the clinical situation
* To critically assess scientific literature.


Syllabus

Students continue with management of the dentition covering controversial subjects where there are differing opinions regarding the most appropiate clinical management. Behaviour management continues with topics on specific psychological methods to deal with dental behavioural problems in children. Prevention of dental caries with the clinical use of flourides is covered in detail. Students present these seminars providing a written handout and delivering a powerpoint presentation. Students will cover various aspects of sedation techniques for use in children. Students will continue with literature reviews and journal club where critacal appraisal of published articles takes place.

Private study

Students will use their private study time to prepare for seminars. During this time they will use the library facilities to search the literature and to create their handouts and powerpoint presentations.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students receive frequent and immediate informal feedback 1:1 on the clinics from their consultant supervisors. Furthermore, they will receive regular termly appraisals Formal assessment comprises assessment of the student's performance across all academic assessments/examinations and clinical components of the course (including formative assessments). Furthermore they will receive termly appraisals including feedback on the level of clinical competence.
