Module summary

A course for beginners in spoken and written Chinese (Mandarin), designed especially for elective students with no prior knowledge of the language. For further details see Department of East Asian Studies website

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should:

- be familiar with the pronunciation and tones of Modern Standard Chinese;
- be able to understand and answer questions on the basis of material covered in the textbook;
- be able to recognise and write approximately 350-450 words, and to read simple prose passages;
- be able to understand the essential features of Chinese sentences;
- be able to translate simple sentences from Chinese into English and vice versa;
- be able to use Chinese word-processing.

Syllabus

Pronunciation and tones are introduced early in the module, along with the pinyin Romanisation system. Practice in the spoken language will continue throughout the module, with students working in small groups for part of each class. To provide practice in listening comprehension, throughout the module, progressively more Chinese will be used in the class, with use of audio-visual materials as required. The elements and stroke order of the script are studied systematically. In order to achieve recognition and written mastery of 350-450 words, and also to introduce key points of grammar and sentence structure, readings of selected Chinese prose passages will be included. Sentence translation exercises between Chinese and English are used to reinforce grammar points and vocabulary, with reading comprehension, short essays and translation of longer passages introduced as language skills develop.
