Module summary

"The teaching and assessment methods shown below will be kept under review during 2020-21. In particular, if conditions allow for alternative formats of delivery, we may amend the timetable and schedule appropriate classes in addition to (or in place of) the Online Learning Workshops. For Semester 2 (from January 2021), we anticipate that this will be most likely, in which case online teaching will be substituted for traditional face-to-face teaching methods, including lectures and practical classes. ‘Independent online learning’ will involve watching pre-recorded lecture material or screen-casts, engaging in learning activities such as online worked examples or remote/virtual laboratory work, etc. Students will be expected to fully engage with all of these activities. The time commitment for independent online learning, and also the frequency and duration of Online Learning Workshops, are approximate and intended as a guide only. Further details will be confirmed when the module commences.


In addition to technical skills and understanding, professional engineers need to have a sound knowledge of how industry operates, including the different roles within companies, the operation of supply chains, legal and contractual issues, and much more. This knowledge is also vital for individual career planning. ELEC5032M is designed to meet this need.

Objectives: This module aims to engage students in developing a detailed understanding of the global engineering industry and assist them with their career plans.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

1. Understand the global nature of the engineering industry and how products are taken from research and development through to the customer.
2. Understand different roles within typical companies.
3. Appreciate the wide range of career options open to engineers.
4. Understand the importance of managing time and resources effectively.
5. Demonstrate the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in writing.

Learning Outcomes 1..4 will be assessed through three group mini-projects. Learning Outcome 5 will be assessed by the essay.

Overview of the global Engineering Industry
Company types and Industry Sectors
The Production Cycle: Systems, subsystems, components, assembly, quality, sales, distribution, supporting activities
Personality types and roles in the workplace
Personal development, writing a CV, the recruitment process
Research, innovation and entrepreneurship in engineering
Working in Industry
Exemplar case studies; Company Profiles and practicing Engineers
Ethical codes and responsibility, professionalism and sustainability

Private study

Students are expected to use private study time to: complete the group mini-projects, read technical and learned society magazines and journals; research and evaluate literature on the agreed topic of the essay; explore a range of industry sectors relevant to Engineers.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will receive feedback on their progress through regular online formative MCQs and by receiving feedback on their progress journals and assignments.
