Objectives

On completion of the module students:
i) should have demonstrated the ability to execute and manage a sustained programme of original research;
ii) will have undertaken research, that in most instances, involves GIS and spatial analysis that has relevancy to their workplace;
iii) will have identified and specified research questions, aims, objectives and hypotheses, and attempted to test/answer/meet these (as appropriate);
iv) will have identified and critically reviewed literature that is relevant to the chosen research topic;
v) will have demonstrated an ability to identify, design and apply appropriate research methods and techniques for completing their dissertation project;
vi) will have shown that they can locate their own original investigations within the contexts of current developments in GIS and geographical research in general.

Syllabus

Students will follow an individual programme of original research under the guidance of a staff member appointed as their supervisor. It is expected that projects will in most instances involve GIS/geographical analysis that has relevancy to the student's work place.

575 hours spent managing and sustaining their own programme of research study (research specification, literature review, timetable, data collection/collation, data analysis, writing up and critical reflection).
