Information for study and research or equivalent Level 1 study. Normally 120 credits at Level 1 or equivalent.

Objectives

By the end of the module students will be able to:
- discuss the philosophical underpinnings of a quantitative approach;
- discuss experimental design as a research method with reference to the range of designs used;
- discuss a range of methods used for quantitative data collection and their relevance to the examination of practice/problems in healthcare settings;
- demonstrate an understanding of common statistical and mathematical approaches in quantitative data analysis;
- discuss the appraisal of quantitative research as evidence to underpin healthcare practice.

Syllabus

The topics discussed are:
- empirical methodology;
- dependent and independent variables;
- experimental designs including random control trials, case control; randomisation approaches;
- sampling strategies;
- methods of quantitative data collection;
- descriptive statistics and inferential statistics;
- ethical issues related to quantitative research in healthcare settings;
- research critique, principles, purpose and framework.
