Module summary

This module enables the student to develop knowledge and understanding and to critically analyse many of the issues which affect healthcare in the global setting. It is divided into two key components. The first is based within the University and is focused upon preparing the student for their international placement and developing an understanding of the healthcare provision in another country through debate, discussion and critical analysis.The second component is a 2 week observational placement in a healthcare organisation in another country of the student’s choice, determined in negotiation with the module manager. This gives opportunities to enhance awareness of other cultures and critically analyse the economic, social and political issues that influence other healthcare systems. On return from their placement the student will share their experience with other students undertaking the module by giving a presentation.

Objectives

Students can critically discuss:
- Healthcare systems in countries outside the UK including economic factors and social and political influences
- Obligations and expectations of undertaking an observational role in another healthcare system
- Factors linked to the international migration of healthcare professionals
- Aspects of professional development through reflection, critical analysis and self-management.

Undertake a 2 week observational placement in an healthcare environment within a country outside the UK

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically analyse the value of sharing and exchanging multi-cultural knowledge and experience
- Debate and critically evaluate learning experiences with colleagues
- Undertake an analysis of healthcare provision within another country
- Critically analyse how different cultures impact on the healthcare professional’s role.

Private study

- Preparing for the exchange, flights, accommodation, visa, immunisations, insurance etc.
- Survival language as appropriate
- Exploring details about the country's location, industry, population etc.
- Examining and researching information about the healthcare system of country to be visited
- Placement observational experience

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students undertake several contact points where progression organising the exchange can be discussed and assessed e.g
- contact with the exchange coordinator are discussed,
- accommodation has been sorted and is acceptable.
- Students are aware of any country specific information re vaccinations, customs, regulations etc
- Completion of the risk assessment enables confidence the student is preparing for the exchange and highlights any areas of concern so action plans can be agreed and set.
- Contact numbers and mechanisms agreed.

Students undertake a reflective session on return to discuss initial thoughts, feelings and impressions and share with other students. This is then built upon in the second reflective session to begin a more critical analysis of experiences and to identify the topic/theme for more in depth analysis to be used as the assessment topic/theme.

Joint session on common topics are shared with HECS 5288 students

The presentation will consist of 5-7 slides covering the following themes: - Brief over view of healthcare systems with some critical analysis of the differences/similarities between the UK and host country - Critical analysis of a topic/theme that has interest the student demonstrating an understanding of cultural and political history/structure that may have contributed to the differences between the UK and host country - Key learning messages for the topic/theme review - Further slides to include Title slide, summary slide which could also be used as a poster for conferences/sharing of experiences, reference slides. - 10 minutes of questioning
