Objectives
In completing this module students will have demonstrated the following: that they have worked and learnt, in pursuit of specific objectives, under their own direction; knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of the vocabulary appropriate to the field in which the study is undertaken; that they followed a programme of reading appropriate literature and have drawn on this in pursuing their study; that they have accurately recorded and interpreted data; competence in accessing, ordering and interpreting new information from a range of sources; a critical attitude to both opinion and evidence; open-mindedness in the face of ?unwelcome? ideas and evidence, and willingness to suspend judgement until appropriate evidence has been gathered, analysed and evaluated; clear capacity for independent critical judgement, together with its sustained application across the topic or issue investigated (a particular requirement at this level for independent study); critical appreciation of both the limitations and strengths of the type of study undertaken, and of the methods and source material used (a particular requirement at this level for independent study); self-discipline and determination in working to deadlines; production of written and/or other work appropriate to the field in which the study is undertaken.Syllabus
Preliminary investigation. Agreement with tutor concerning study topic and parameters. Location and recording of appropriate data. Ordering, interpretation and evaluation of data. Review of progress via learning log. Compilation of final submission for assessment.

Methods of assessment
An essay (normally 6000 words), report or other form of submission appropriate to the field in which the study is undertaken (75%); a learning log to be submitted at the end of the semester (25%). A minimum requirement of the learning log (to be met as a condition of passing the module overall) is that it should include details of all material consulted (cited in a form appropriate to the field of study) and a brief assessment of its value to the work undertaken; also a note of preliminary enquiries, procedures followed, and draft plans for the final submission.
