Module summary
This module aims to provide an introduction to the key concepts relating to people's behaviour within organisations. It will consider individual behaviour, small group processes and wide-scale organisational systems, drawing on key disciplinary approaches including psychology, sociology and political science. The module aims to explain the relevance of such approaches for practicing managers.Objectives
This module aims to provide an introduction to the integrated study of the key concepts and underlying theories relating to aspects of behaviour of people within organisations, drawing on the perspectives of the employee, the work group and the organisation itself. One of the key objectives is to develop the student’s understanding about a range of employee attitudes and equip them with improved knowledge about the role of managing employee behaviour in a contemporary organisation.The module also aims to explain the relevance of such theories for practicing managers.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- interpret and explain the concept of organisational behaviour
- identify, explain and critique different theoretical accounts of this concept, and the implications of these for the practicing manager
- evaluate the strengths and limitations of these different theoretical approaches
Skills outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
- identify, explain and critique the practical implications and usefulness of such theoretical accounts to today's managers through the use of written and oral communication skills.
Syllabus
The module will begin by looking at topics that relate to the individual within the organisation, followed by small groups, and finally the organisation as a whole system.
