Module summary

This module critically examines the evolution of global economic, cultural and social conditions in the 21st century post-industrial era. Underpinned by key international documents, such as UNESCO 2005 Convention and 2018 updated version, and contextualised through international case studies, it provides students with in-depth understanding and analytical skills on key issues regarding the creative economy in global context.

Objectives

This module aims to develop an understanding of the discourse and practice of creative economy. In particular it focuses on the evolution from industrial to post-industrial 21st century knowledge-based and culture-based production and consumption patterns, and how nations, communities and entrepreneur artists respond to such economic, social and cultural changes globally.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. Understand and articulate the evolution of creative economy discourse, within an international context;
2. Critique key concepts and debates on the global creative economy, including labour, IP, cultural exchange and trade, sustainable global development;
3. Examine the relationship between top-down international and national policy development and bottom-up entrepreneur artist response to the evolving cultural, social and economic conditions;
4. Apply this knowledge through selected local and international case studies;


Syllabus

The module introduces the discourse and practice of creative economy globally. Using key international documents as the navigation point (such as UNESCO 2005 Convention and 2018 updated version) further contextualised through case studies, students learn to analyse and interrogate evolving international economic, social, cultural production and consumption conditions and related issues. Topics and debates to be considered in the module are:

-Labour and production theories
-Entrepreneur artists
-Digital economy
-Intellectual property
-International and national cultural policy
-Global cultural trade and exchange
-Intangible cultural heritage
-Sustainable global development

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In a verbal presentation (20 minutes for teams of 3-4 students), students will research and analyse a case study of their choice by applying theories and referencing key sources and debates from the module. Tutors will provide verbal feedback at the end of the presentations, and written feedback is normally provided within 10 working days. Students will use this feedback to develop their individual essays on a selected case study that is different from the presentation. In this way, student will build their research knowledge and writing skills into their final essay.
