Module summary

This module is intended for students with Russian A Level or equivalent. The module is designed to train participants in all aspects of practical language skills, and aims to prepare students for their period of study in Russia by focusing on authentic written and audio-visual material in a variety of registers and styles. Students will develop their written and spoken Russian, as well as their general linguistic skills, through reading and translating authentic texts, creative writing, consolidating and learning new grammar points, and regularly speaking with native speakers on a range of structured topics.

Objectives

This module focuses on the development of reading, listening, speaking and writing skills through a variety of language exercises, including work with an in-house video course that prepares students for their Year Abroad. Students will develop their written and spoken Russian, as well as their general linguistic skills, through reading and translating authentic texts, creative writing, consolidating and learning new grammar points, and regularly speaking with native speakers on a range of structured topics.

Students will be prepared for their period of study in Russia by regular use of authentic written and audio-visual material in a variety of registers and styles.

Learning outcomes
1. understand general conversation on everyday topics and handle conversational subjects adequately;
2. read authentic texts (which may be abridged) on a variety of non-specialist subjects;
3. produce simple, structured pieces of creative writing, demonstrating grammatical accuracy and a broad vocabulary on selected topics;
4. have a thorough knowledge of the essentials of Russian grammar and demonstrate the ability to adhere to the rules of Russian grammar both in speaking and writing.

Skills outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- touch type in Russian in standard software, (in Microsoft Word and email packages);
- understand authentic speech, audio recordings and written texts of a suitable level;
- assimilate and develop essential vocabulary from teaching materials;
- recognise and identify basic grammatical and syntactical patterns in the language materials used;
- take an active part in classroom discussions in the target language;
- have an awareness of a range of registers in both the spoken and written language.

Syllabus

The module will consist of three weekly practical language classes that focus on:

- grammar
- the development oral and writing skills via an in-house video course.

Training in word-processing in Russian will also be provided and students are expected to improve their typing skills independently using an electronic typing tutor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There will be short weekly homework tasks and regular written and oral exercises not formally assessed for the purposes of formative feedback.

Feedback will also be given on class tests to support revision for the invigilated and oral examinations.

Class participation will also be used to monitor progress.
