Module summary

This module recognises the varying scientific and mathematical backgrounds of students entering the BSc Sports and Exercise Science degree schemes. It is designed to ensure that all students receive grounding in the fundamental concepts of the mechanical study of sport and exercise on which the more advanced modules in mechanics and biomechanics are based.

Objectives

To introduce students to the mechanical principles underpinning human movement in a sports and exercise context.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students should have an understanding of:
(a) The different types of force;
(b) Newton’s Laws of Motion and when they apply;
(c) How to describe motion using appropriate terminology and understand how it is quantified;
(d) Work, energy and power;
(e) Aerodynamics in sport;
(f) The mechanics of impacts.


Syllabus

Students will cover, at an introductory level:
(a) Movement forces, including aerodynamic forces;
(b) Gait and kinematics of locomotion;
(c) Kinetics of locomotion and its applications to gait analysis;
(d) Newton's laws of Motion;
(e) Energy, work and power;
(f) Momentum and the conservation of momentum;
(g) Impacts in sport.

- 2 hour reading per lecture (20 hours)
