Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to
- Perform efficient and thorough online searches of the scientific literature and other sources of scientific information
- Organise bibliographic information in a logical and accessible manner
- Summarise and critically evaluate scientific publications
- Integrate scientific information derived from multiple sources and write a balanced review of the topic under consideration
- Cite the scientific literature correctly
- Describe the scientific publishing process
- Outline basic copyright considerations in scientific publishing

Learning outcomes
On completing this module, students should have knowledge of
- The construction of effective searches of bibliographic databases and other online sources of information
- The use of information management systems relevant to the organisation of bibliographic information
- How to read scientific papers effectively, efficiently and critically
- How to summarise a scientific paper to produce an abstract
- How to integrate information from a variety of sources to produce a balanced, evidence-based review
- The scientific publishing process and associated copyright considerations

Syllabus

This module builds skills in online information searching, organising bibliographic and other information, efficient and critical reading of scientific writing. It also considers the scientific publishing process and introduces the copyright considerations relevant to it.
